Know What to Ask
5 Questions You Should Ask Your Insurance Agent
Relationships are what keep businesses going. These five questions will tell you a lot about the relationship you have with your agent today.
"Who do you work for: the insurance company, or me?"
Many agents are paid by, and answer to, one insurance company. Ask directly whose interests come first when they make a recommendation.
"Did you take the time to understand my business?"
Good coverage starts with knowing how you operate: your people, your equipment, your contracts, and where you're headed. If your agent has never asked, your policy may not fit.
"Do I have a dedicated advisor who handles my account?"
When you call, you should reach someone who knows your name and your business, not a call center or a different person every time.
"Do I have insurance I don't really need?"
The right agent will tell you when you're over-insured, even if it means a smaller commission. Paying for coverage you don't need is just as costly as missing coverage you do.
"Did you recommend this carrier because they pay you higher commissions?"
Your agent should be able to explain why a carrier is the best fit for you: coverage, service, claims history, and price.
